The short version

ChatGPT Exporter works entirely inside your browser. There is no server, no account, no analytics and no tracking. We do not collect, receive, store or sell any of your data, including your conversations.

What the extension does with your data

  • It reads the conversation you are viewing on chatgpt.com so it can build the file you asked for. This happens on your computer.
  • The files (PDF, Markdown, Word and so on) are created locally and saved with Chrome's download feature.
  • Your settings, such as your preferred format and file-name template, are saved with Chrome's extension storage. If you have Chrome sync turned on, Chrome itself may sync those settings between your devices. That is handled by Chrome, not by us.
  • To read a conversation, the extension asks ChatGPT for it using the session you are already signed in with, the same way the ChatGPT page does. To embed images in your export it also fetches them from ChatGPT's own file servers. These requests go to OpenAI's services, not to us.

What we do not do

  • No servers receive your conversations.
  • No accounts or sign-ups.
  • No analytics, advertising, cookies or tracking, in the extension or on this website.
  • No selling or sharing of data, because we never have it.

Why each permission is needed

Chrome asks you to approve these when you install the extension. Each one is used only for the purpose described.

  • Access to chatgpt.com (host permission): lets the extension add its buttons to ChatGPT pages and read the conversation you want to export.
  • storage: saves your settings, and temporarily holds the data for a PDF or PNG render page while it is prepared.
  • unlimitedStorage: very long conversations can be large. This stops Chrome's normal storage quota from interrupting an export.
  • downloads: saves the exported file to your computer, including into the sub-folder you choose.
  • contextMenus: adds the right-click Export this chat menu.
  • clipboardWrite: lets the Copy feature put Markdown, text, JSON, CSV or rich text on your clipboard.

This website

This website is a static set of pages. It does not use cookies, analytics or any third-party trackers. Your theme choice (light or dark) is remembered in your browser's local storage on your own device only.

ChatGPT Exporter is open source under the MIT license, so you can inspect exactly what it does.
